Deafening silence

The Egyptian Gazette staff

Ethnic cleansing of Muslims in Myanmar is continuing and the world community is offering little to stop the horrendous brutality and oppression. Thousands of Rohingya Muslims have been suffering from all forms of discrimination at the hands of the Myanmar government not only in the past few months but for decades.

Their cry for help is not heard. Fanatic Buddhists, who look down on these Muslims as a minority that does not deserve to live, have destroyed entire villages.
Muslims in Myanmar have been classified as illegal immigrants, although they have lived there for generations, hence the government has withheld their rights as citizens in many aspects and has subjected them to systematic oppression.

The massacres committed against Rohingya Muslims have earned these refugees sympathy around the world. But that’s definitely not enough to prevent the ongoing genocide.

While Al-Azhar released a statement condemning the malpractices, this week Cairo has witnessed a demonstration staged by a number of political powers protesting against the injustice, which the entire world has continued to watch impassively. The Muslim world is no exception, although it should show a firm stance to save the lives of these people.

Apart from political pressure and sanctions that could be imposed on the Myanmar government, relief aid is also lacking. While human rights organisations usually protest loudly when it comes to crimes perpetrated by Muslims, in the opposite case they remain silent.
