OIC urges Obama to raise Rohingya Muslims issue during Myanmar''s visit

JEDDAH, Nov 13 (KUNA) -- Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) secretary general Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu urged US President Barack Obama to discuss the Rohingya Muslims' plight during his visit to Myanmar, due later this month.

In a letter to Obama, Ihsanoglu urged the US President Tuesday to raise the issue of the Muslim community during his talks with the political leadership and opposition of Myanmar, in yet another bid to ending violent acts against the unarmed minority Rohingya Muslims in Rakhine state.

This, he added, would be the first step towards political reforms in Myanmar coupled with protection of rights of minorities.

Ihsanoglu, in his letter, explained the systematic attacks by the Bhuddists against the Rohingya Muslims.

He said the OIC received reports suggesting that attacks against the Rohingya Muslims were close to ethnic cleansing. The reports also showed that the Muslims were subjected to deliberate attacks and forced displacement.
Ihsanoglu said the OIC has been offering humanitarian aid for the people affected by the conflict in Rakhine without exceptions.

He said the government of Myanmar has rejected international calls to recognize the rights of the Rohingya Muslims.
Between October 21-26, last year, more than 30 Rohingya villages and 5,086 houses in the southern state of Rakhine were burned, resulting in the displacement of some 9,000 people and about 70,000 Rohingyas before the outbreak of the recent violent conflicts. (end) yms.bs KUNA 132118 Nov 12NNNN
