A further €1 million of humanitarian aid for victims of inter-communal violence in Rakhine State, Burma/Myanmar
16/11/2012 - Following the latest outbreak of inter-communal violence
in Burma/Myanmar's Rakhine state, the European Commission has increased
its humanitarian aid to those affected by a further €1 million.
More than 110,000 people have been forced to flee their homes since June, the majority are Rohingya Muslims.
This €1 million follows €7 million of humanitarian funding the Commission has already allocated to people in Rakhine State in 2012. It will be used to provide food to the victims and will be implemented by the World Food Programme, which is already active in the area.
In a situation where so many people have lost their homes and their possessions this additional funding can help provide life-saving assistance to all of those affected provided that our implementing partner organisations on the ground are given access to all areas in Rakhine state.
European Commission humanitarian experts have visited Rakhine State to assess the situation, confirming that food, shelter, drinking water, basic sanitation, hygiene and other basic items are the most common and urgent needs.
Many of the displaced people are forced to shelter in camps in cramped conditions with poor sanitary facilities. They are dependent on outside assistance to cover their basic needs such as food and basic medical assistance.

Background
In June and October 2012, Rakhine State experienced bouts of wide-spread inter-communal violence between predominantly Muslim and Buddhist communities. Last month violence flared again and 37,000 people, mostly Rohingyas, were displaced and some 5,000 houses and other buildings destroyed.Many of the displaced people are forced to shelter in camps in cramped conditions with poor sanitary facilities. They are dependent on outside assistance to cover their basic needs such as food and basic medical assistance.
